Idol of Independence

Many of the ways that independent is defined in numerous dictionaries…

Not dependent; not subject to the control of others; not subordinate. Not holding or enjoying possessions at the will of another; not relying on others. Not subject to bias or influence; not obsequious; self-directing; as a man of an independent mind. Not connected with. self-commanding. self-governing

And some definitions of rebellion…

An open and avowed renunciation of the authority of the government to which one owes allegiance; or the taking of arms traitorously to resist the authority of lawful government; revolt. Open resistance to lawful authority. One who disobeys the king’s proclamation; a contemner of the king’s laws.

Rom 13:1-7Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

It is well known to most of Americans how and what started the revolutionary war that subsequently led to gaining independence from Britain. The rebelling against the King of England, not liking Britain’s rule of the colonies, and not wanting to pay the taxes they were ask to pay. One account of what led up to the revolutionary war starting:

Questions to ponder on…
Was/Is this country a christian nation? Was/Is it dependent on the living God? Was/Is it blessed? Was/Is it submissive to the will of God(obsequious)?

Our asserting our independence and rebelling against the powers and government that God ordained over us, shows that we weren’t just and right in our actions, because they were in direct contradiction to the word of the Lord and the Spirit of Christ. Do I really want to be lifted up in pride and celebrate a day of rebellion against God? Brethren, may we rethink our position in aligning ourselves with this world and it’s “virtues” of pride, self, ambition…Lord have mercy on us…
